Health Science Artifacts

These artifacts were chosen from my undergraduate solo research that I completed as part of a creative inquiry, as well as my upper level health courses.

This artifact is a semester-long research project, analyzing data from the most recent year of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) to determine if/in what manner sexual health was being experienced differently by LGBTQIA+ Clemson students than their cisgender, heterosexual peers. I found that LGBTQIA+ students were significantly more likely to experience interpersonal violence in the forms of physical sexual coercion, drug-induced sexual coercion, and isolation. It also became apparent that the NCHA was not geared towards being able to adequately assess health outcomes of queer relationships, through the exclusive use of cissexist terms and framework. I presented my research findings to members of the Clemson administration with public health recommendations for improving the state of sexual
healthcare for queer, gender nonconforming, and trans students at Clemson.

The purpose of this interview and essay was to analyze changing cultural conceptions around breastfeeding from a critical anthropological perspective through an interview with a health professional. I had the opportunity to discuss with a local lactation consultant the realities of advocating for breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding parents despite the challenges. There are many sociocultural conditions that contribute to lower rates of breastfeeding in the United States such as the profit-driven interests and misleading marketing strategies of formula companies. The lack of policy instituting mandatory paid maternity leave as well as historical stigmatization of breastfeeding parents contributes to lower rates of breastfeeding.
